报告内容简介
Intermolecular interactions and surface characteristics play a crucial role in determining the physicochemical properties and functionalities of materials. Significant efforts have been devoted to characterizing these interactions, particularly noncovalent ones, in soft materials such as surfactants, polymers, biopolymers, and biological systems. In this talk, I will briefly introduce the fundamentals of intermolecular and surface forces, along with commonly used nanomechanical techniques for their measurement. I will then present our recent progress in applying these tools to quantify intermolecular and surface interactions in polymer/biopolymer materials and biological systems, with a focus on wet adhesion mechanisms in marine mussels. Our studies have systematically elucidated the interaction mechanisms involved in mussel adhesion, including biopolymer–metal ion coordination, cation–π, anion–π, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bonding interactions in aqueous environments. These fundamental insights have guided the development of multifunctional soft materials, such as self-healing polymers/hydrogels and wet adhesives, with promising applications in bioengineering. These findings offer valuable understanding of biological self-assembly processes and provide new strategies for designing multifunctional soft materials and interfaces through tunable noncovalent interactions.
